And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior”— Luke 1:46–47 (NIV)

One of the things we often fear is the future. We worry about what might happen, what could happen, and what we would do if any of the scenarios we had imagined take place. We try to anticipate what can happen and plan for every situation. And that yields an overwhelming feeling that overcomes many. However, if we make the choice to surrender and appreciate God for all of today’s benefits, our hearts and minds might be found in a better position whenever we are faced with uncertainty.

In the book of Luke, the Lord’s angel Gabriel informed Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God. It’s hard to imagine Mary’s reaction after hearing that. Shock, confusion, and frustration might have easily been her prevailing emotion. Although Mary’s exact thoughts are not revealed to us, we discover how she responded to this life-changing moment.

Mary simply said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)

And in Luke 1:46–55, Mary expressed her song of praise. She said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46–47).

Mary could have felt a tinge of worry because there were so many unanswered questions regarding the future. And if she did — instead of succumbing to it, she made the decision to surrender to God’s will and express her gratitude to God. Remarkably, despite her faith-stretching circumstance, she set a wonderful example on how we can respond to the future’s uncertainty.

In times of uncertainty, do not lose your gratitude and your praise. Worrying about tomorrow prevents you from fully living in the now; you will fail to see all the blessings and the goodness of today because you are already so preoccupied with ‘what ifs’ of tomorrow. God gives us strength for each day. He provides what we need for the moment. Therefore, learn to fully enjoy today and to thank God for it.

In times of uncertainty about the future, live in the truth of who God is and who we are in Him. Your Heavenly Father knows exactly what you are going through, and He will see you through it all. Do not allow any kind of bad news to scare you. Our God is still on the throne, and all things still work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

Our God cares for you, and He loves you! Do not lose your joy in doing the things that God has planted in your heart. Slow down, surrender, and enjoy the process. Get to know Him more as you seek and trust Him. Enjoy life in Him and live it!

Reflection Questions:

  • How can you wholeheartedly trust God in times of uncertainty?
  • How do you react to things that are not under your control?
  • Do you feel unsure, overwhelmed, or confused today? (Ask the Lord, who holds your future, to give you wisdom and faith to obey Him as He guides you.)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Give me a heart of thanksgiving. Teach me to embrace the joy and the blessings you have given me today. Help me believe in what I could be and all that I am in You. Teach me to take one day at a time and trust You. Please give me the strength and wisdom to do everything I need to do.

Lord, help me today. Show me the way — one day at a time.

In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
