The Storage

“Good people have good things saved in their hearts. That’s why they say good things. But those who are evil have hearts full of evil, and that’s why they say things that are evil. What people say with their mouths comes from what fills their hearts.”

— Luke 6:45 ERV

A tree and the fruit

In this passage, Jesus is speaking with the disciples, illustrating a tree and its fruit. This passage shows how a tree is recognized by its own fruit. It shows that we cannot pick figs from other trees like thorn bushes or grapes. How can this passage be connected in our everyday life — most especially our walk with Jesus?

The storage and the outlet

In Luke 6:45, we are shown that what is stored in our hearts will reflect what comes out of our mouth. What does that mean? We speak what is inside our hearts. It may be good or evil. It may be love or hate. It may be poison or life. It can be Jesus or our idols in life. Thomas Watson, an English preacher and author says, “Words are the mirror of the mind — they show what is in the heart.” We basically cannot hide what is really stored in our hearts; our mouths reveal it.

Heart Check

What really fills your heart? You can be a Christian for many years, but how is your heart? Let Jesus reign in your heart — not just for the sake of doing good deeds, but for the main reason that He really is the Lord of your life. By doing so, you will be changed by Him, and you’ll be able to share the good news to other people, especially to the unbelievers you meet in life.

Reflection

  • Be conscious of what we store in our hearts.
  • Be mindful of who we are connected to, because it will show in how we speak.
  • If Jesus is the tree and we are the branches, our fruits will reflect Him. If His word is stored in our hearts, it will show in our lives — especially in how we speak.

Prayer

Father God, we thank You for the reminder you gave us in the passage today. Your Word is alive and active. It is essential to change our lives. O Lord, purify our hearts so we may reflect You in what we speak with our mouths. Please remove anything in our hearts that is evil or displeasing to Your eyes. We ask that only You, O Father, through your Son, Jesus, reign in our lives. Let our heart and lips be an instrument to worship your holy Name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
