The call to work is a call to worship.
At times that we feel burdened by what we do when we are at work, most often than not we convince ourselves with the statements like, “Pasalamat ka nga may work ka eh” or “Okay na ‘toh kesa wala”. I hope we can try to avoid ending up on those statements by changing perspective and shifting towards the beauty of whatever kind of work we do in the context of the Bible.
We are God’s workmanship, and we are created for good works. This is who we are through Christ, this is grace, and this is also a wonderful purpose of our life. As what Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God does not only give us the work, but He also gives us the place and the chance to serve Him through our work.
We are called to serve through whatever work we have. Although our workplace or title may change, the calling remains. When we appreciate work as a gift from God, a gift of grace, a blessing and a calling, our hearts can now fully shift to true gratefulness as well as to the perspective that we are serving our One True God.
Colossians 3:23–24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for human masters,” since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Understanding that we are serving and working for our Lord might mean that even our managers don’t recognize the effort we’ve put on or even we haven’t received the promotion or salary we think we deserve, we continue to give our best effort with all our heart.
